Joe’s Scanner – Advanced Settings

This page walks through the advanced settings available in the new Joe’s Scanner desktop app. These options give you more control over how calls are queued, how fast they play, and which traffic you hear.

Connection & Account Validation

Open the app and go to Settings. At the top of the page, you will see the Connection section. This is where you tell the app which server to use and enter your Joe’s Scanner account credentials.

Enter your email and password, click Save, then Validate to confirm your Joe’s Scanner subscription.
  • Server – For Joe’s Scanner, this should be https://app.joesscanner.com.
  • User – Your Joe’s Scanner account email.
  • Pass – The same password you use on joesscanner.com.
  • Validate – Contacts joesscanner.com and confirms your subscription. You should see a green banner with your plan details when validation succeeds.

If you change your password on the website, update it here and click Save and Validate again.

Queue Control

The queue controls determine how many recent calls are kept in memory and visible in the list. This is useful if you want to scroll back through earlier calls without overloading your system.

  • Calls Displayed – Controls how many calls remain in the visible queue. Higher numbers keep more history but use more memory.
  • The slider under “Keep X recent calls” can be adjusted up or down depending on how far back you want to scroll.

Autospeed

Autospeed helps the app catch up when traffic gets busy. When the queue grows beyond your configured threshold, playback speed automatically increases until the queue is back under control.

  • Autospeed when X calls are waiting – When the queue reaches this size, the app increases playback speed automatically.
  • This is especially useful on lower powered systems or when monitoring very busy systems.

Filters – Controlling What You Hear

The Filters section lets you mute or disable traffic by receiver, site, or talkgroup. This is where you can clean up the feed so you only hear the agencies and channels that matter to you.

Use filters to mute or disable specific sites or talkgroups, and choose your preferred theme at the bottom of the page.
  • The list is organized as Receiver > Site > Talkgroup.
  • Mute – Temporarily silences audio for that row while keeping it visible.
  • Disable – Completely blocks that traffic from being queued or played.
  • Clear – Removes the filter row. It will be recreated automatically if new traffic arrives from that path.

Theme Selection

At the bottom of the Settings page you can choose between System, Light, and Dark themes. System follows your operating system setting, while Light and Dark force the app into a specific visual style.

Tips for Power Users

  • If the app ever feels “behind,” lower the number of Calls Displayed and enable Autospeed at a lower queue size.
  • Use Disable on rarely useful channels (for example, test talkgroups) to keep the queue focused on real incidents.
  • Start with the default filters, then refine them as you listen. Clearing a row is safe – it will come back when new traffic arrives.

If you need help dialing in advanced settings for your local systems, contact support and include your region and which channels you care about most.
